The image that goes with this message represents some of the most common (and sometimes worse) stereotypes about some countries/cultures. Do they represent 100% of the population of that region? Obviously not. Do foreign people think they may be true? Unfortunately, some of them do.
Some stereotypes do have a reason, a far origin that applied to some unknown characteristic of that people… some uncertain “true” lies in the back of that image. Some others are simply a way to diminish “the other”, to make it an object, a lower identity that represents no threat to us. But in general terms, stereotypes create an image that is usually just that, an image. It is not the reality, and it can not be applied to every individual in that culture/country/area.
International and Intercultural educators need to fight against those stereotypes. We need to go beyond, look behind the image, learn the reality, learn from inside, and help students and colleagues see the other culture. It is a hard task, but posible and definitely worth it.
La imagen que acompaña a este mensaje representa los estereotipos más comunes (y en general, los peores), sobre algunos países/culturas. ¿Representan al 100% de la población de esas regiones? Evidentemente no. ¿Creen los extranjeros que son ciertos? Desafortunadamente, algunos sí lo creen.
Algunos estereotipos tienen una razón de ser, un origen lejano que se aplicaba a alguna característica en general desconocida de ese pueblo… una “verdad” incierta subyace en el trasfondo de esa imagen estereotipada. Otros son simplemente una manera de despreciar al “otro”, de hacerlo objeto, una identidad menor que no representa ninguna amenaza. Pero en términos generales, los estereotipos crean una imagen que no es más que eso, una imagen. No es la realidad, y no se puede aplicar a cada miembro de esa zona/país/cultura.
Los educadores internacionales e interculturales debemos luchar contra esos estereotipos. Necesitamos ir más allá, mirar detrás de la imagen, aprender sobre la realidad, desde dentro, y ayudar a estudiantes y colegas a ver la otra cultura. Es una tarea difícil pero posible y absolutamente gratificante.
